What's New for 2008

Kid's Deli 2008

Kids Deli

The newest program for Piedmont began in June 2006. Kid’s Deli is a summer free meals program for children that receive free or reduced school meals through the National School Lunch Program. The program is operated in areas where at least 50% of the children in the elementary school meet the criteria for “free or reduced” meals.

Even though the target population is children meeting the criteria, this is an open meal site. “Open” meaning that all children in the area are welcomed to eat meals even if they don’t qualify for free or reduced meals.

In 2006, the Kid’s Deli operated from the William Campbell High School Cafeteria, Naruna (located between Gladys and Brookneal). Children were bused to the site. The intent was to serve lunch and then return the children back to their homes. However, as the summer evolved the children stayed about 3 hours. So we incorporated table and board games, music and outdoor activities to entertain the children.

In 2007, the program was expanded to include breakfast and it moved to the Brookneal Elementary School. The location change was great for everyone. The children worked on arts and crafts, had access to a full size gym and a playground. Breakfast began at 8:30 am and lunch was served at 11:30 am. After lunch the children begin to leave the site at 12:30 pm for the return ride home.

Kid’s Deli serves two purposes for the children and families in the county—it provides meals and it offers children free summer activities. This is important because the Gladys/Brookneal area has not resources for summer vacation to offer.

That area is not alone in not being able to offer children recreational opportunities. Kid’s Deli 2007 saw children from Pittsylvania County, Halifax County and Charlotte County as well as other areas of Campbell County.

The plans for 2008 are underway. The program begins the first Monday after school is dismissed for the summer and ends Friday, a week before school starts. We will hire 35-40 employees this year as meal monitors, drivers, kitchen assistants and teachers.

The program is open to all kids ages 2-18 years old ( children under 6 years old must be accompanied by an adult or a sibling over age 13 years; all children must be potty trained). Parents should remind their children of proper behavior while at the site and while being transported to and from the site.
