Helping Hands
Why have hands if they’re not helping? Helping Hands are not idle. This program receives the most calls throughout the year and the winter and summer are the busiest. During this time, families are burdened with the additional cost of usage for heating and cooling. The recent rate hikes and the higher cost of heating fuels have attributed to the current increase in applications for assistance.

Additionally, Helping Hands provides residents with rental assistance.
Helping Hands Financial Assistance is the only program limited to the residents of Campbell County. Many persons loss their jobs in the Brookneal area, therefore, we have reserved most of our budget for assisting those persons living in that area of the county.
There is no particular criterion for assistance. Piedmont’s policy states that families may only be served once per year. In some cases, once per year is not enough; however, funds are limited.
The program provides a portion of payment toward the utility cutoff notices, rental eviction notices, some medications and fuel assistance. There is no assistance for automobile fuel, telephone bills or the like. When seeking assistance, applicant should always bring all bills and notices related to the expenses for which they are applying.

Normally, emergency assistance is earmarked for the needs as described, however on occasion; we direct funds to sponsor children at Christmas. We work closely with Dawn of Altavista, the Salvation Army, Interfaith Outreach, Campbell County Department of Social Services, the United Way of Central VA and Lyn-Cag. If a need for sponsorship arises within their agency, we will assist them in meeting the need.
